That's MINE!

#poetry #ownership

A baby emerges from the womb,
notices the mother,
and jots a tiny note
in a small file
the content of which reads–
that’s mine!

A good mother
allows the mistake
though the infant soon learns
that mother is not always there.
A specter appears
Called insecurity.

A man lands his ship
on an Island in the South Pacific–
Plants his flag upon the soil
and boldly asserts a claim.
“This is mine in the name of,”
His lips wag and say.

The islanders though,
have other ideas.
Notice the man strikes them
a lot like long pork.
After the rope they assert
“Supper is mine!”

A woman falls in love
sees a rival to her mate
“How dare she!”
The woman thinks.
Doesn’t she know,
He is mine?

The man has no idea.
That he belongs to two.
No Solomonic trial–
Will spare him from love
for he is someone’s beloved
whether he likes it or not.

An old woman looks down
at bruises that were not
there yesterday.
“This is my body,” she thinks.
She doesn’t believe it.
Because it was not always so.

Messiah sets the dinner table.
This is my body, eat.
This is my blood, drink.
One of you is a devil.
Dip your hand.
Do what you must.

The only one to fully
give up mine,
was consumed by
everyone else’s
assertion.
“This is mine.”

Though, the assertion gives way
A voice from on high–
“None of that was ever yours.”
“It was mine.”
